Why do People not put the date on their Blog Posts?

calendarI recently followed a post over at the Wordpress.com forum that had me somewhat bemused.

The poster was trying to remove the date from his blog posts. Why?

I don’t know about you but I find it really annoying when I’m reading any blog post (and articles as well) that don’t have a date they were written.

Certainly in my field of Website Marketing the information changes very rapidly. Anything written even just a few months ago could be old news and possibly inaccurate now.

I frequently check the date something has been written when it’s suggesting a new development in my field and I’m sure other people must do as well.

So I’m really can’t understand why anyone would want to hide the date that their blog post was written.

Anyone know why someone would want to do this?

  • Mike,

I’m on your side here. I look for dates on blog posts to see the “freshness” of the content and to put the content into perspective.

  • Possibly because some people use WordPress to run a website which is not a traditional blog? Maybe using it as a CMS to display content where the post date is not relevant?

(Although I completely that blog posts should have a date, I’m planning to edit my blog theme one day to make the date more prominent.)

OK I am late to this party – been busy writing content for my affiliate marketing websites. And herein lies the problem with a visible date:

You say you can’t understand why “anyone” would want to hide the date on a post, but you know, we’re not all marketing “website marketing”.

You don’t always want potential buyers to know that you wrote the product review 12 months ago – it may put them off buying. If the product has not changed, it’s no problem that the review is 12 months old, but the potential customer may perceive it to be so. I don’t want people judging me on a 12-month-old review that would be the same if I had written it the day before.

Physical products are not the same as services. You need to change the factory to change them.
