Well it had to happen eventually and it looks like it has.

YouTube has finally been given the Adwords treatment and its more evidence of the growing impact of Google on the Video sharing giant.

If you are in the United States then you will have noticed “Sponsored Videos” appearing on YouTube whenever you search for videos. They generally appear down right hand side of the screen (exactly like Adwords Ads on Google search)

These sponsored videos and advertising slots and guess how the advertisers pay for these slots?

Yes you guessed it. They pay every time someone clicks on the video and then visits their video on YouTube.

So, now we have pay per click YouTube.

If you want to understand more, here’s Matthew Liu, Product Manager at YouTube to explain all.

This is only available in the US at the moment but I’m sure they will roll it out to the rest of the world in the coming months.

So what do you think?

Has the innocence of YouTube been destroyed by the capitalist might of Google! Or is this just an example of a sound business strategy that should be embraced by all of us who use video to promote our businesses.

After months in the works, I have finally finished my Google Adwords eBook and I’m very proud of it.

My working title for ages was the Pay Per Click Secrets eBook however once it was written I realised it had grown into a complete guide on Google Adwords.

The book is aimed at anyone fairly new to Adwords or maybe not so new but just frustrated that they can’t seem to get the results they want. In fact even people who think they are experts at pay per click might be surprised by some of the information I’ve packed in there.

How the Secret to Pay Per Click ebook became Simply Adwords

It was when I finished the ebook that the title Simply Adwords came to me. The comments I kept hearing from the reviewer of the ebook were things like,

“It’s explained so simply” or “It simply tells me all I need to know”. So that’s what I decided to call the ebook: Simply Adwords.

Here’s a run down on the book.

Chapter One - Getting Started

A step by step guide for creating your first Adwords Campaign. All of the screens are explained and you will be shown exactly how to do it properly. So many people get the set up wrong and they are always struggling after that. This chapter makes sure you do it right first time and land running.

Chapter Two - Keywords

Excuse the pun here, but Keywords are KEY! This chapter is packed with great advice on how to find those all important keywords.

Many Adwords accounts I take over do not have enough keywords or they have the wrong keywords. If you already have an existing Adwords account that isn’t working for you, then this chapter alone could be all you need!

Chapter Three - Ads and Landing Pages

Learn the secret of Ad writing. Create Ads that boost you click through rates and drive the customers to beat down your door.

Find out what makes a great Landing Page. Learn how to write the words that make people buy from you. It’s not just words either. I’ll explain how to layout a Landing Page for maximum effect.

Chapter Four - Turbo Charging Adwords

Now we turn the heat up. I’ll share with you the Pay Per Click secrets used by Adwords experts. These secrets are gold dust and they are guaranteed to put your Adwords Campaigns into hyper drive.

If, like me, you have contributed to the debates about the next new features that Google should include in Webmaster then you will have seen many posts requesting (pleading, demanding!!) that the missing links report include something to tell you where the bad link is coming from.

Well they have finally implemented this change.

What has this got to do with free links?

Simply put, you can now find out who has typed bad link to your site and help them change it to a good link.

Matt Cutts explains it really well in his Gadgets, Google and SEO blog. He also has a link to a really useful post on creating a customisable 404 page so that you can pick up any visitors that follow a broken link to your site.

A couple of months ago I talked about driving your Clicks through the roof by getting your keywords into your display url.

One method I talked about was Dynamic Keyword Insertion. Catchy name!

What I didn’t mention though was that you can control the capitals being used when you insert your keywords.

It’s actually very simple to do and very effective.

Let me first just explain Dynamic Keyword Insertion for those that don’t know what it is.

Simply put you can get Adwords to put into your Ad the keyword that triggered your Ad.

To do it, you simply put this code {keyword} into your Ad text. Now when ever your Ad is display the {keyword} is replaced with the keyword that triggered the Ad.

Imagine if you had a list of keywords such as this

Nokia Phone

Motorola Phone

Sony Ericsson Phone

You could have the following as the Title line for your Ad

{keyword} Deal

Now your Ad will display the brand of phone entered into Google. For example, if Nokia Phone is the keyword triggering the Ad then the Title would say nokia phone Deals. This is very powerful for getting your Ad notice.

The only problem is that the keyword that gets inserted is all in lower case and that doesn’t look so good.

The good news is that you can add capitals to the inserted keyword very simply. All you do is capitalise one or more letters in the keyword code. Here are the different ways you can use it.

Keyword First letter of the first keyword is set to capitals (eg: Nokia phone)

KeyWord First letter of each keyword is set to capitals (eg: Nokia Phone)

KEYWORD All letter of the keyword are set to capitals (eg: NOKIA PHONE) - Not something Google will tolerate for more than one word.

KEYword First Word is all capitals (eg: NOKIA phone)

KEYWord First Word is all capitals and first letter of all other keywords is capitals (eg: NOKIA Phone)

I don’t think I missed one but I’m sure someone will post a comment and tell me if I did.

ShareThis

Tired of searching Google for information on a product only to find all the top sites that Google lists are sites like Kelkoo, Dooyou, PriceGrabber and many more.

It seems you have to go through the first pages of links to find nothing more than directory sites that actually tell you nothing about the product.

It all stops NOW.

I found this great blog post from Richard Bartlett called Google search results without the dross

He’ll to you how to use the Google inurl command to filter out all the drossy, pointless directory sites.

As he explains in his blog, he discovered this idea from a great site called Give Me Back My Google

At last, Google back how it was in the old days!

Now if only Google would sort out its act on these directory sites and start giving quality search results for consumer product searches again.

This week I was working with a new client on their Adwords campaigns.

I’d already reviewed the website before meeting them and I was amazed when they told me that the site had already been professionally SEO’d.

Why was I amazed, well because it was yet again a classic case of people getting ripped off by companies claiming to do SEO when they wouldn’t know SEO if it stood up and smacked them in the mouth.

I can often run one simple test and nearly always so called “SEO’d sites” fail miserably.

So what is this test?

Well it’s simply checking that unique Title meta tags have been used for all pages.

This tag is probably the single most important tag on your website for the search engines. You should have a unique Title meta tag for every page on your website and it should include the keywords for that page.

I can usually check a site in seconds and find it is littered with duplicate Title Tags. It’s usually because people just copy and paste pages as they are creating new material for their website and they forget to update the Title Tags.

Easy enough to do and forgivable for your average hobby website.

But for a so called SEO company to miss this is unforgivable. It’s like a chef forgetting to cook the food!

So how do I quickly test for duplicate Title Tags

I use Google Webmaster.

In the Diagnostics section they have a tool called Content Analysis. You just click on the tab and it will tell you if you have any duplicate Title Tags.

As you can see from the picture below it also tells you lots of interesting and useful information about your Title Tags, as well as your Description Tags.

Go check your site now. You might be in for a shock!

Oh, and don’t be shy. Post a comment below and let us all know what you found out!

One final point. There are some fine SEO companies out there. It’s just that there are a lot of bad ones as well.

Were they stolen in the night while you slept or is it part of a more sinister plot!

Actually, it all part of Google’s housekeeping and to be fair they have been telling us all for months that they were going to do this.

Earlier this month they delete all the old reports we all had in our Report Centers that were created before March 2008.

I imagine their servers must be getting pretty full of all of our old reports.

However before you panic, they have only removed the reports. You still have all of the data you always had.

So you can still run reports that check data before March 2008 (assuming you had data already for then!).

I’m sure they will be doing this again on a regular basis so if you have reports that you really want to keep I would very much advice you to save them to your computer using their export facilities. You can export them into Google Spreadsheets, .CSV files, Excel, HTML or another format quite easily.

Many Adwords advertisers are advertising their products in places that are a complete waste of time and energy. What’s more they probably don’t even know they are doing it.
Are you one?

Many Adwords advertisers are advertising their products in places that are a complete waste of time and energy. What’s more they probably don’t even know they are doing it.

My example of ice cream to Eskimos is extreme but the principle is sound. Even if your product would sell into the location you are trying to sell, it might be that your advert just isn’t connecting with the people there.

So how do you find out which locations are responding well to your advertising and which are not?

Well Google have recently released a new report to its Adwords Report Center that does just this for you.

The new report is called the Geographic Performance report and you can find it in the menu for all the other standard reports.

With the report you can get a great understanding of the impact of your campaigns and AdGroups across all the geographic locations you are advertising.

You can find out about impressions, clicks conversions and all the usual statistics such as average cost of click etc.

This information is just another invaluable tool to allow you to target your campaigns more closely to the successful markets and get more return on your Adwords spend.
Well you can thanks to a new report that Google have released to its Adwords Report Center.

If I had one complaint about the report at the moment, it is that it will only deliver the results on a day by day basis over the time that you select for the report. I would prefer to get a summary Region and Country/Territory. Still there is the export to Excel option and this will allow you to create your own summary totals.

So are you and Ice Cream seller? Go on, post a comment and tell me where you have been trying to sell your goods recently that was a complete waste of time.
