Keywords are the words or phrases that people type into the search engines to find sites that have what they are looking for.

Web optimisers pay a lot attention to their keywords. They use these keywords to optimise their web pages for the maximum relevant traffic they can. Unfortunately some people get carried away and start to use keyword stuffing which is a Black Hat SEO technique that should be avoided.
