Whilst you may know how many people reach your website and how many sign up or buy something, most websites lose large numbers in between. This can be 80% or more of the traffic that you have paid for in one way or another. Without knowing what the crowd are doing as they move from page to page, it's very difficult to improve the conversion rates.
People who visit your website are likely to have lots of different motives, and will visit different pages in some sequence. TrailMaps provide the business with a "filtered" map of the most significant "trails" that visitors follow as they move from page to page. A bit like watching a crowd from a helicopter.

TrailMaps are based on the logs accumulated by the "web servers" that actually run your website. Whilst these logs have a somewhat arcane format they contain lots of information and are the traditional basis for web statistics.
This data is good enough; provided one treats the information as a useful guide and tests the validity of assumptions made. Crucially TrailMaps require no special software and no alterations to your webpages.
Google Analytics is a powerful toolset, and we use it alongside TrailMaps to manage our site!
We configure and use Google Analytics for
Linking final conversions to the advert a visitor first clicked on
Showing the search terms used to find particular pages
As an alternative to traditional web statistics packages
We use TrailMaps for the management summary :
Finding out what happens in the middle of a website
Showing the big picture - something that doesn't fit on a screen
Showing the signicant routes through the website many of which haven't been predicted
Providing a quick way of assessing the effectiveness of our website in getting people to use the paths we've built from entry to the conversion pages we want
Focusing on the patterns of movement within the website and adjusting the options to improve the visitor experience.
We also provide support and associated services in conjunction with a TrailMap that are specific to your situation; and which Google wouldn't provide for free.
